"As a long-time resident of Iron County, I am deeply invested in the success and bounty of all our great county has to offer. I value integrity, trust, transparency, and small-town values above all else."

INTEGRITY

Steve has a long-term vision of Iron County, and he understands the responsibility and foresight that a commissioner needs to have. He values integrity and respects others and their opinions. Likewise, Steve recognizes that stakeholders, citizens, and staff may have differing opinions, interests, and ideas in achieving goals and realizing the county's vision over the years to come. All input is valued and will be carefully considered, as Steve firmly believes that every citizen deserves to be informed, included, listened to, and respected. Steve is committed to making decisions collaboratively by seeking feedback from trusted staff members, colleagues, and every community member. He strives to build strong relationships of trust across all county departments and every citizen in the county. The vision of all residents and stakeholders of Iron County will always be valued and considered in policy making and when dealing with issues affecting the county.

Steve is not only invested in Iron county being a wonderful place to live, work, and play, he is devoted to serving the community and giving back with every opportunity he is given. Steve has always felt a deep love and appreciation for individuals with disabilities, law enforcement, first responders, veterans, and those currently serving in the military. Much of his lifelong service efforts have been focused on finding ways to give back to, support, and honor their contributions to our society.

TRUST & TRANSPARENCY

Steve has a conservative approach to spending. He values fiscal responsibility. Every tax dollar was hard-earned by the citizens of the county, and great care will be taken to spend wisely. When developing a budget, Steve will work closely with the county treasurer and auditor to identify, analyze, and weigh priorities in achieving the County's mission and vision. He will set spending limits, be sparing with budget promises, and set aside funds for emergent issues.

The financial health of the county is a top priority for Steve. With input from the County Auditor, Comptroller, and County finance team, Steve hopes to develop a multi-year, step-by-step plan to reduce debt, increase liquidity, and improve the County's credit rating. This plan will include refinancing debts on buildings and bonds to create significant interest savings. A good financial standing makes the County better prepared to weather any economic challenges that might come our way.

PROTECT OUR RURAL WAY OF LIFE

Steve knows that Iron County is one of the most desirable counties in Utah, with its tight-knit communities, broad industries, and responsible citizens. This popularity has an economic plus-side, bringing an influx of spending, jobs, and a community-feel for families to gather in our county. However, this growth can also have challenges, such as increased traffic and excessive water, sewer, and power demands. Still, the county’s challenges can be met and their effects minimized through responsible planning and forethought. As it continues to grow, Iron County needs a leader who will prioritize creating a plan to prepare for and meet the future needs of its residents.

Community input will be essential in the development of this plan. The plan will address issues related to growth, such as minimizing noise and congestion, the development of single-family neighborhoods and high density housing, commercial spaces, parks and recreation, etc. Steve values the vision of both urban and rural county residents. The plan will address accommodating growth with minimal to no impact on our rural lands.

Water supply is an enormous concern for Iron County. The inevitable future growth of the county compounds the difficult issue of water being in short supply. The adverse effects of water shortages to urban living remain obvious. However, addressing water shortages in rural areas is often overlooked. Water is essential for agricultural production and it plays an important role in ensuring equitable, sustainable and productive rural economies. A comprehensive plan for water acquisition, purification, and conservation will include meeting the current and future needs of both urban and rural areas.

PUBLIC SAFETY & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Steve is a strong supporter of law enforcement. He prioritizes public safety and will continue to back local law enforcement in their efforts to retain the peace and security that our county has enjoyed.

Along with supporting law enforcement, Steve believes that Iron County is in desperate need of a new jail. Capacity and maintenance issues of the current jail add undo stress and challenges to officers dedicated to ensuring the proper treatment of all inmates. Steve understands the complexity of building a new jail and the importance of placing it in a location that would have the least impact on economic development and resident’s safety. Many residents felt excluded and blindsided when the initial location of the new county jail was announced, Steve included. Steve, among many others, asserted his stakeholder rights and took particular interest in the determination of its new location. The experience reaffirmed Steve’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder involvement in all issues facing the county.

Steve also plans to work alongside local first responders to combat crime, addiction, and mental health. Iron County deserves the best programs to help their loved ones; Steve will be a commissioner who will work with local legislators to advocate for the advancement of these issues.

Improving the safety of our communities includes updating emergency preparedness procedures. Potential disasters are unexpected and can be devastating. Therefore, it is imperative to plan for earthquakes, wildfires, flooding, wind, and extreme winter weather. Steve is committed to consistently updating and improving all county emergency preparedness plans.
